Queer Reads Lexicon

Queer Reads Library

What is Queer Reads Lexicon?

Queer Reads Lexicon is a project started by Queer Reads Library in 2019, to explore queerness through locality and languages. It serves as a public-engaged online platform to collect queer words in Cantonese, Mandarin, and English, as well as images, with a focus on contemporary Chinese and Asian queer communities arcoss the world.

Why should queer people read and make a queer lexicon?

The words being used, circulated, and invented by queer people are evidence of the life and languages of our communication and recognition of each other in several places depending on one’s migration as well as local contexts. The lexicon is not only a tool but also an archive of our queer threads from past to present。

Some Kind of a Mood

Yuen Che Hung

This audio+poetry book is a collection of English poems written in the 80s in Hong Kong and London by HK storyteller Yuen Che Hung aka Uncle Hung. The written poems are split into 2 sections and several poems have been turned into spoken word with music performed by three independent HK musicians: Wilson Tsang, Sze Ka Yan and Wong Hin Yan which enhances the reading experience.

The audio poetry is presented in a cassette tape which is a nostalgic nod to the 80s and is uniquely attached to the book cover. The tracks can be listened on Bandcamp / watched on YouTube.

British-Chinese bookbinding artist Anh Tran @kamipaperuk serendipitously created the book jacket and cover when she experimented with weaving upcycled plastic bags collected from a London market.

An edition of 300 is produced for this unique poetry publication. Published by Small Tune Press, February 2021.
