Sebastian Utzni

No super hero was able to prevent the attacks on the World Trade Center in 2001. Sebastian Utzni collected comics that were published between 1973 and 2001 and that show shockingly similarity to the images of the 9/11 attacks.

Vibration Highway

Andrea Éva Győri

In Vibration Highway, Andrea Éva Győri illustrates her explorations in female lust in 80 truely vibrating watercolors. The book consists of three series: The first one is created in her studio – she invites women to masturbate in front of her while drawing them. In a second series she illustrates the women’s corresponding phantasies and inner visions. The insights from a 3-month orgasm workshop form the third part, a guidebook to the female orgasm. A crucial part of this artistic process is the communication with sexologist Dr. Dania Shiftan, whose analyses and written interpretations complement Győris images. In addition to being an artists’ book, Vibration Highway thereby exists also as a research project, exploring new perspectives on femineity and the connections between body, phantasies and personal experience.

The art project entitled Vibration Highway was conceived by Manifesta 11 in Zurich, under the curatorial direction of Christian Jankowski.

Und im Sommer tu ich malen

Fabian Schubert, Hank Schmidt in der Beek

We can see a painter in painterly landscapes. Art enthusiasts might recognize the places where the big names of plein-air painting of the last centuries like Caspar David Friedrich, Ferdinand Hodler, Franz Marc, Paul Cezanne, Claude Monet or Vincent van Gogh et al. created their masterpieces. Hank Schmidt in der Beek stands in front of his canvas with the paint-brush in his hand. At second glance, you’ll recognize that he isn’t painting the same scene his famous predecessors painted there decades before: Instead, Hank Schmidt in der Beek is painting the pattern of his shirt.

Since 2009 Hank Schmidt in der Beek works on the ongoing series “Und im Sommer tu ich malen” (‘And in Summer I do Paint’). Together with the photographer Fabian Schubert he travels through Europe to paint his own self portrait. The work combines conceptual and concrete art as well as plein-air with portrait painting.

On 30 double pages the book juxtaposes the painting in opposition to the photograph of the moment of its genesis. A homage to modernist painting and its documentation.
